Summer Programs

Conference on National Affairs (CONA) and National Judicial Competition (NJC) are national programs offered to high schoolers during the summer months. Both programs are run through the YMCA North Carolina Youth and Government program. The YMCA Conference on National Affairs, open to students in grades 9-12, is an eight-day conference held in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Its primary focus is for students to gain an awareness of National concerns and issues.

The National Judicial Competition, open to students in grades 9-12, is a competitive Appellate Court and Mock Trial competition program that takes place annually in Chicago.

Conference on National Affairs (CONA)

How do I get selected to go to CONA?
CONA delegates are selected to represent North Carolina alongside more than 500 participants from various Youth & Government programs throughout the country. The North Carolina YMCA Youth & Government CONA delegates come out of our Youth Legislature program. The selection process is highly competitive and the 25 students chosen to represent North Carolina are what we consider the best in the nation.

What happens at CONA?
CONA participants author individual proposals of national or international scope and then champion these proposals through a competitive debate process. Proposals are scored on originality, evidence of research, national/international importance, feasibility, and presentation. The top proposals, as scored by the participants, continue to advance until reaching the final round. CONA is well known for the quality of the debate and the indefinable “Blue Ridge Spirit.”
